This morning while I was watching my daily episode of 'Fashion File' on CosmoTV ( Somewhat embarrassed to say I watch that channel) the theme of the episode was the origins of the trends we're seeing today.
It was really interesting to hear the origin of my favourite trend this season - lace, but more specifically BLACK lace.
Trends that you see around you on the street, for example skinny jeans when they first came out, are usually first seen on the runways about 4 years previous to you seeing them on the girl sitting next to you on the bus.
European trends; which basically constitute everything except for the classic Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch and other surf/skate type brands, are caught by the european public much faster than us North Americans.
Fashion cities such as New York, LA, Milan, Paris, London, Tokyo are much quicker on the fashion uptake then say little old Victoria BC. Not saying we aren't fashionable here (y'alls style is outta this world!), but it isn't rocket science to know that we are a bit behind here in high fashion...I mean come on, we JUST got a Coach store.
ANYWAYS, moving back to Black Lace...The trend started in the fall fashion week of 2008 when Miuccia Prada explored beautiful cotton laces in mainly black. Creating beautiful ankle length shifts out of the material was seemingly unexpected for the designer as she had earlier claimed that she 'hated' lace.
As Prada is one of the most well-known brands of high fashion, the trend was stemmed from her collection and began cropping up everywhere in collections all over the world.
Italian designers know where it's at - no wonder Prada's collections are the most sought after on the fashion scene!
So keep buying your cheaper versions of Prada's style! I know I will...
